WELLNESS and HAPPINESS

 PROVERBS TO MEDITATE

In your dreams live a prophet, a visionary and a doer. Wake them up!

If you like to live with dignity, you have to take risks
Even the best linguist can lose a comma or let an accent fly away.
The well-being of your body can change according to the attitude of your mind
Marvelous things happen all the time, but we have to learn to see them.
It is not an extreme effort but a higher vision what will produce better results
The only constant of the universe is not the light, it is movement.
We must be one hundred per cent honest to ourselves if we want to be honest to others.
We must learn to plan from the future and act in the present.
We must not define our character due to our adversaries, or dilute it for our friends
Some get lost in their own thoughts; others go astray in their silences.

All scars can disappear if you can heal the mental root that produced them.
From time to time, family discords return to test your pains and your laughs

A SPIRITUAL PLAN IN TIME OF CRISIS

If we are informed that a major problem in coming in our way like a tornado, an earthquake, an hurricane, fire, or a tsunami, it is wise to take some safety measures. It is the same with any personal, social or financial crises. Normally it consists in finding a high and secure refuge. Even though taking all the precautions we know that we have to endure the situation and go through it. The success will depend on the most relevant aspect: the high minded state of consciousness we can sustain to be calm and centered in our essential being.
Being a luminous presence makes the difference

When experiencing a somber and fearful situation, we can make a difference; in any crises we have the divine right to be luminous. “The best and most beautiful things in this world cannot be seen or even heard, but must be felt with the heart,” said Helen Keller, who being deaf blind, made a difference. Spiritually we are never disabled we are always luminous. At the tipping point of a crisis we can soothe the tension, and be the turning point light house in the middle of the night manifesting our inner delightful Presence.

Keep the calm and
give others a hand of peace

In the middle of a storm, you can make a difference keeping the calm, and giving others a hand of kindness. Be a rock of refuge, be a salvation to those in need. This can be done replacing anger and frustration with peace, not the peace of the world but the peace that comes from the divine Source . Being at peace allow us to radiate peace: this makes a difference.

Being centered makes a difference

Crises can send us spinning around and cause negative mental arguments to haunt us day and night. You can make a difference being centered in your strong and firm Spiritual dimension: your divine silence. You are not going to be a leaf in the wind but a mountain standing serene and beautiful in the horizon of events. Being firm and serene we are the wisdom and joy of God.

Spiritual values are untouched and we can abide by them

You can make a difference if you realize that your real values are untouched by financial crises, social crisis or of any crisis: Truth, love, compassion, friendship, care, and integrity do not diminish by market forces but are fortified by adversity. That is why Benjamin Disraeli said, “There is no education like adversity.” Adversity teaches us to stand strong from our inner spirit, which is the same spirit of the Omnipotent.

Stand with your head high and you heart pure, you can make a difference.

You can make a difference if in the middle of chaos you can stand with your head high and your heart pure. This demands that we continuously cleanse our soul. Thomas Merton said that “The greatest need of our time is to clean out the enormous mass of mental and emotional rubbish that clutters our minds and makes of all political and social life a mass illness.” Cleaning our mind and purifying our hearts lets the light of our being bring healing and purity to our circumstance.

Don’t accept fear nor transmit fear. You can make a difference.

In the middle of a storm, sickness, fire or crises don’t make fearful assumptions or expand them. Orison Swett Marden said, “Obstacles are like wild animals. They are cowards but they will bluff at you if they can. It they see you are afraid of them they are liable to sprint upon you; but if you look at them squarely in the eye, they will slink out of sight.” Stop fear with courage, from a dominant point you will think swift and clearly.

Face the problems with solutions

It was during the worse part of the Second World War that Churchill demanded to those around him not to spend time telling him the problems, because problems speak by themselves, but to bring him the solution. Remember what Einstein said, “Intellectual solve problems; geniuses prevent them.” Orienting our minds to intelligent solutions preventing problems makes a difference.

Do your best and trust. Your confidence will inspire others

Even if we don’t know the results of our actions, it is our duty to do the best, and trust that all things work for good for those who love good. Calm inaction can be a wise action if reaction means to rush into worse problems. “The one who endures to the end will be saved” says Matthew. Our will is endurance in peace. Our stance is a loving confidence.

Forgiveness is superior to Guilt

When we condemn others, we condemn ourselves, because we are one. Don’t punish yourself for what you could have done; forgive yourself and others for ignorance, bad actions, or greed, mad ambition, manipulation or the likes. Like the prodigal son stop looking down and look up. Solutions come from heaven, harmony provides constant bliss. The arms of love are already open and waiting for you.

Make a difference: see Crisis not as panic but as a transformation point in your life

Crisis is a word associated to catastrophe, calamity, emergency, pain and suffering. For a crisis to occur there must be a concurrence of forces due to unstable situations, crisis can bring a new balance of forces for a new equilibrium. Use those forces in your own advantage to transform your present situation for a better one. Progress demands change.

Friendship is not quoted in the money market, only in your heart

Value your heart and give to it a caress: enjoy being with friends and have fun, enjoy laughing, give a hug to someone and receive hugs continually. They are more precious than silver and gold, they are free and do not leave you with a debt that hinders your sleep. Please realize that the Merciful One is nearer than your breath. The Friend of the friendless is hugging us tenderly and lovingly.

Don’t take problems personally

Impersonal problems are enough burdens. Don’t be attached to them and take them as your own. You are not the only one facing tribulations, others are suffering as well and probably worse, do not create a burden of unnecessary sadness. Carry a light mind and a cheerful heart.

Be at peace and act from God

“When we accept tough jobs as a challenge to our ability and wade into them with joy and enthusiasm, miracles can happen,” said Arland Gilbert. Take all the information from the best sources you can access, but let the Divine Presence lead you and guide your steps. Be a light unto yourselves said Buddha. Let the Light of Christ open the way.

Love is not in shortage and always increases your value

In order to be genuine we must learn the basics: love ourselves like our neighbors. Thus we need to love our neighbor generously first, otherwise the golden rule fails. Love expressed energizes our connections and multiply our strength.

Blessed by the Crisis

Crisis like earthquakes shake us from our comfort zone, we have to move and avoid stagnating. We suffer if the feeling is that the crisis is whirling around us and can send us whirling too. We must have the strength to detach from it. Practice detachment and see yourself from a higher perspective and say, “Oh there it is me, confused and worrying about what is going to happen.” You can affirm “I am not that suffering body, nor that worrying mind. I am the Spirit of power and a consciousness of dominion and clarity. I am going to take decisions and not let the crisis decide for me. I am going to be blessed.”

A crisis is a dream to be awakened from

A crisis is a bad dream, similar to the good dream that stocks can grow to heaven. Is it not a dream to believe that people can get rich doing anything? When we admit a dream of pleasure, we open the door to dreams of suffering. I remember a story of a girl who was dreaming about a dragon persecuting her. She decided to run, but the dragon started to chase her. When the tongues of fire were very near, she decided to really run faster, but suddenly she stumbled over a stone and fell down. The dragon finally grabbed her in its hands and looked into her eyes. She, trembling asked, “Are you going to eat me?” The dragon answered her: “I don’t know it is your own dream. You can dream what you want!!!” Looking to reality from the Divine Eye, we can take control of these dreams.
Being spiritually awakened we can make a difference for us and all.

CLOSE CALLS

"Close Call" is an idiom used to indicate a narrow escape, also a warning.  When a person comes out of a difficult experience, like an accident, a burning home, or a medical surgery a doctor may say: "the person received a wake-up call"—a warning sign. An announcement that life is not eternal in material conditions. Life is subject to change, and sometimes drastic ones. Close calls are specific tips telling us we need to make changes.

A dearest person was in holidays with her husband. One day she received a call from a relative telling her that her last living sister had died. She asked her husband to go back home. He asked her why? She answered him back in a very convincing way: “I know that now it is my turn.” I need to prepare myself, this is the sign that I was waiting for. She had been in the hospital, but the doctors did not find anything serious. A few months later she died in prayer. A medical doctor who was a friend at the moment, told him that people at a certain age feel that death is close and they need to be prepared for it.

Close calls are important reminders that human Life is not eternal, that we are fragile and that we will leave this state at some point.

Then it is better not to repeat the same bad experiences, and to let go of behaviors and burdens that drive us to these narrow escapes of suffering.

One day an old-time friend sent me a message: “If you come to see me, I will wait for you.” She was 104 years old. She read my articles and writings, and when she could not read because her sight was weak, she asked one of her friends to do so. I went to see her a year after, because she lived a long distance from my home. We were 14000 km away. We talked for a while. It was delightful. Then she looked at me and asked me to pray for her to have a smooth and harmonious passing. After that, she said to me: “Ciao” I left her hand and said back to her, “Ciao”. We knew that it would be the last time. A year after, at 106 years old, she passed away peacefully.

A doctor and dedicated student of spirituality who had attended several of my seminars, decided with his wife to move to a hotel-residence for seniors. That decision meant they had to sell their house and leave many of their precious goods because the new home was a smaller one.

One day, after they had settled down in the new location, he told his wife that he was going to take a nap… an hour later, she found him dead. I have the firm conviction that he had a notice, an inner conviction to do the change. He left his dear wife in a safe and beautiful environment. Doing so, he could pass on in peace

If the acting and thinking drove us to the hard experience from which we left unharmed or suffering, we should pay attention to what life is telling us to avoid severe consequences again.

J. Krishnamurti in his video “What is death?  He says: “Everything is cause and effect, and as a result “what you sow, you will reap”, in this life span or in future ones". He sustains that many of our human problems are due because of our attachments to people or to conflicts. The main aspect is that detachment is difficult for us, and in consequence we suffer from it.

According to Dalai Lama attachments produce angers, and they destroy the physical and spiritual harmony, to dissolve them we can use meditations, prayers, contemplation.

Spirituality is not a pill to calm down our nervous system, and it is not a cosmetic treatment for our personality either. Instead to search for external solutions, spirituality encourages us to look into our inner self. It develops our own strength through the energy of the Spirit. Spirituality is a way of life that we walk taking on the problems and facing them. It does not evade the challenges but it uses them for awaking, elevating and purifying ourselves. We know that we have to be prepared, not to escape from death, but to go through it with integrity, being conscious of reaching out to another dimension of Being.

The close calls can be a benediction when they wake us up to change our direction in life, to go forward in peace and harmony to the perfection of Being.

I'M ALWAYS RIGHT AND YOU...TOO

Most of the problems of the world arise because the” I”, the ego, always believes that it is right. Nobody acts against his reason. The enigma is that the "I" acts without seeing the reason of others. The reason of one's self will is blind; it makes us act without empathy. Cain could only see his reasons for killing his brother Abel. He thought himself less appreciated than his brother. But his reasons were against an unjust paternal god, not against his brother, who was innocent. In spite of everything he killed him. Almost all the discords, fights, aggressions and wars are for believing that one is "right" and the others are wrong.

I remember the confession of a Jewish teacher, in charge of the literature department of one of the most important universities in the world, who taught children in her synagogue. For her, the most beautiful story was that of the Exodus. Because, she maintained, it is a song of freedom from slavery. But one day, a little girl asked her what guilt the children of Galilee and Palestine had to be killed and their land occupied. The question left her without sleep for many nights and to answer it took more than a year. She wrote a book. She had seen the story from the ego of a group, but had never started thinking with empathy or curiosity like that girl. Sometimes it is the innocence that makes us see and reconsider that having reason or not is not what matters.

There is a Chassid story about two disciples of a rabbi that, I love to remember. One of them explains his reasons for the best path to God: with all his effort follow the path of the Law, pray and live righteously. The old rabbi told him that his reasons were right. Then a second disciple, and said that his schoolmate was wrong because effort was pure ego. On the contrary, the true path was one of surrender, of awakening to the teaching of "Not my will but thine." The old teacher after thinking told him "You're right". A third student who was nearby came and protested to the old rabbi: "But teacher, you cannot say that both are right". The rabbi smiled at him and said, "You too are right!"

The mind, reasoning with limited thoughts, makes us believe that we are right. But nobody has all the knowledge. The wisdom of the old master, without arguing, gave the reason to all, because in their mind and with their limitations, they had it. Philosophers like Kant, explained that reason is insufficient to capture the reality of the world. Therefore it is useless to discuss who is right. Wisdom consists in knowing how to recognize that it does not matter who owns each little reason, what matters is the immensity of love, benevolence, and goodness.

I'm right, you're right, we're all right. Such is the dogmatism of reason, that there are sick people who do not give in to the reality of their personal, business or sports problems. They do not want to forgive, they do not want to change, and they do not want to understand, even if that makes them suffer. They want to be right and “That is enough!” An alcoholic will never admit that he drinks too much, and should leave. The sugar lovers, despite suffering mutilation, they are right, and justified to eat cake. I'm right, you're right, we're all right. What does it matter?! What matters is to respect ourselves, not to attack us and, if possible, to appreciate each other for no other reason than affection. Well, as Pascal said "The heart has reasons that reason does not know." Love does not need reasons. Instead of wanting to be right, it is imperative, to give in, to change for our well-being and that of others, to have mercy and compassion is what it is worth.

A story about animals says that one night they met and began to complain about humans and everything that humans took away from them. The cow complained that humans take her milk, the hen that humans take the eggs, the pork the humans take meat to make ham, and the whale to keep for his oil. Finally with a tremulous voice spoke a snail. I have something so valuable that, if they knew, he said, they would take it away more than anything else. I have: Time!

Would not it be a nice act of kindness if, instead of wanting to be right, we all took valuable time to meditate and have mercy and compassion, abundant compassion for one another? This would be a small step for each person, but a great step for all humanity!

Happy blessings for all!

PROVERBS FOR MEDITATION

Moving with purpose avoids going adrift

Laugh regenerates your blood. Laugh often, rejuvenate your life!

Destroying altars never affected the gods, only those who adored them.

Who can talk with the sea; can also talk with the sky.

We own a storehouse of beliefs. From this supply we manifest wisdom or misery.

Creative wisdom is the middle way between feelings and imagination

Inside each empty moment, if you think, something appears.

To contemplate on something ignites the light of its existence.

Pain is a severe teacher; even cruel if we resist its teaching.

TERRORISM AND SPIRITUALITY

What motivates terrorists? One study argues that the main aspect motivating them is "what they have in their hearts," that is, their spiritual feelings. In the West, given the prevalent materialistic view, this dimension and its influence on human actions was underestimated. As beings with the same spiritual essence we should empathically connect in that dimension to understand and avoid violence.

On September 4, 2017, the CNN news network echoed a study of ISIS prisoners interviewed at Kirkurk, in northern Iraq, by Scott Atran and colleagues (published in Nature Human Behavior). It shows the close relationship between terrorism and spirituality. The study will also reveal that the Kurdish soldiers, who were fighting them, had a commitment to sacred values, a readiness to leave the family for those values, and strength for belonging to the group or community they represented.
Understanding this phenomenon is essential to establish some kind of connection and understanding, because people can be killed, but ideas, values and spiritual principles cannot be killed. The only possibility is to present superior ideas, values and spiritual principles to elevate them and transform those individuals into superior human beings. At the same time, accept with humility that, in this process of empathy and understanding, we can rise and strengthen ourselves too.

After the attack on the Twin Towers in New York, the common reactions were of revenge and persecution to the culprits. Very few attempted (such as Arum Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, and others) to understand the motivation of those who sacrificed their lives to perform such an extreme act. Why did they do it? Would it have been avoided if they had been listened and spoken to heart to heart? Few perceived that it was related to their spirituality. Scott Atram understood them as feelings and inner values so intense that he allowed them to die for them without caring about their family, their friends, or the suffering of their fellow human beings. This is not new; some two thousand years ago there were Christians who accepted to die devoured by the lions, in some Roman circus, convinced of their spirituality. During the Vietnam War, there were also Buddhist monks who burned themselves alive as acts of protest.

According to Atran and his colleagues, the first face-to-face interviews were not helpful, the prisoners were irritated. When they developed a new line of inquiry with questions related to their spiritual values, the terrorists began to open up to dialogue. Scott Atran's idea was that knowing their way of thinking could be useful in determining common anti-terrorist policies.

"The Art of War", written by Sun Tzu (or Sunzi) 544-496 BCE, considers war as the art of persuasion, a battle to win minds and hearts. For this purpose the best general has to be an enlightened Taoist teacher. This text was appreciated throughout history by strategists from around the world. Some basic concepts are: 1) Understanding the enemy's mind to know how to deal with it; 2) to avoid direct confrontation, instead organize the engagement through an indirect strategy. Finally a philosophical approach: "The best victory is the one achieved without fighting"; simple concepts reflecting the action of inaction. In the West, it seems that people are moved more by passion than by understanding, and that revenge guides the actions of the majority, despite being condemned by so-called "sacred" books. While protecting ourselves, we have to penetrate the hard core of passions with transforming ideas. Water, doesn’t fight, but moves forward avoiding obstacles. Do we have to remember that water pierces the stone? The best victory is the one obtained without fighting. How to do it?

My experience tells me that terrorism begins with negative feelings. We always see and are offended by what bothers or hurts us. We rarely see what damages or hurts other people, especially in distant places. That which generates indignation, anger or resentment for what some considers an injustice, discrimination, mistreatment, aggression, non-acceptance, etc., whether real or imagined. These feelings remain like seeds latent in many minds, and a fact, or a message by internet or other means, awakens and causes them to germinate. This latent state is used by those who "fish" or recruit young people, to use them for their own purposes. Once indoctrinated, they can exert a "spontaneous" violence to frighten, hurt, or kill in schools, a marathon, a cinema, outside a dance place, means of transportation, music recitals, mostly in places where there are innocent, carefree and helpless people.

A characteristic of terrorism is that it presents itself without the traditional logical meaning. It does not follow the thought process of cause and effect. Massimo Teodorani (Astrophysicist) in his book entitled " Cincronicità , tries to demonstrate the relationship between physics and the psyche. He argues that studies at the level of elementary particles undoubtedly demonstrate the phenomenal reality, which we normally expect to be linear from cause to effect, has at its base a matrix in which the principle of causality ceases to exist”. This astrophysicist coincides with other thinkers from the field of science. He says: “The matrix of our reality is spiritual ... for the moment the same synchronous events seem to remind us that we are not passive observers of a cold universe of watchmaking, but also actors of creation”. (Sincronicitá, Il legame tra physical and psiche, da Pauli and Jung a Chopra, Gruppo Macro, 2017, Cesena (FC) Italy).

This is fundamental because as active actors of creation our thoughts, our prayers, our intentions and meditations have influence on what happens in the matrix of reality.

In turn, a theory proposed by the Frenchman Jean-Pierre Garnier-Malet, argues that according to quantum theory, we are wave and particle, and as such we inhabit two times: one conscious and perceptible, and another unconscious and imperceptible. In imperceptible time we can make millions of things, which we then pass into perceptible time. This is the information presented synthesized as intuition. That is the explanation, for this theoretician, of the way in which it is possible to see dangers before they hurt and to erase them. This is certainly a new explanation for a very old phenomenon. The vision of the solution to the dream of the pharaoh, on the part of Joseph, and to understand years of abundant harvests; followed by droughts, allowed the solution to be programmed and hunger avoided.

Terrorist attacks are not the classic attacks of one army against another, or of one nation or faction against another. The first objective is not to conquer a territory, but it is to conquer idle or weak mental fields. Those minds, resembling the quantum world, express reactions in which the logical order, ceased to exist. For this reason they appear almost spontaneously in individuals moved by a dogmatic idea, imposed fanatically, to force a vision or ideology on others. Terrorism as well as terrifying aims install hate and violence where there is peace and harmony. Some time ago, I heard a philosopher maintain that all struggle is spiritual, because all wars are struggles of ideas, and ideas come from the spirit. Fighting ideas through cannons, airplanes, tanks, aircraft carriers or bombs is a waste of time and resources, because no bomb or gun ever killed an idea.

Capturing the person who placed a bomb or knowing who committed suicide does not terrorism or violence in our communities and the world. It is necessary to go to the source where the seeds of the disease of hatred and violence are hidden, so that they do not germinate or disperse like a plague. We have to create the antibodies to stop and heal the plague. This is a spiritual struggle. A concept shared by many traditions says "As man thinks he is". What we think is what defines us and determines actions and consequences. Ernest Holmes said "Thoughts are things". If someone throws at us a thing, a stone, or a thought, we will not be hurt if we have an inviolable shield. We will not need to throw another stone, an eye for an eye or, a tooth for a tooth. Developing the immune system against violence is a responsibility of all. We have to come out clothed with the shield of the spirit and compassion.

Thoughts, bad or good, flattery or insults come and are perceived. It is our mission to know how to perceive what to sow. Gandhi's triumph was to oppose non-violence to guns. Every human being is redeemable, as was Nelson Mandela, who wanted to put bombs. Path which took him to prison, there with meditation acquired a new understanding and learned about nonviolence, which led indirectly to triumph. The psychologist Marshal B. Rosemberg tells his story, of how he was beaten as a child over and over again, without even understanding why. In time he understood that they did it for being Jewish. So he dedicated his life to developing empathy and nonviolent communication. In his book Speak Peace in a World of Conflict (Marshall B. Rosenberg, Puddle Dancer Press, 2005, Encinitas, CA), he says: "What you say next will change your world”. Jesus simply expressed it: what you sow, you reap. It represents the moral law of karma. It is a remarkable law of cause and effect. In the Gaza Strip, confronting, empathically, those considered themselves his enemies, Rosemberg demonstrated that his system works, transforming those enemies into friends inviting him to dine to their home.

Hatred is not healed with more violence or more hatred, nor searching for its cause; for it is very difficult to know where to stop going back in the past. Hatred arises from what is believed to be a great injustice against the intimate way of thinking, being bombed, or economic suffocation to defenseless people. It is true that at the moment the greatest violence worldwide comes from Muslim sectors, but the case known in the United States as the "Unabomber", was not; the Beatles suffered tremendous violence by Christian radical groups, because of them he said they were more famous than Jesus Christ. They burned their records and songs; they had to move with special security guard by the threats. Hate can arise in the mind of a basketball, rugby or football fan because someone else used a chant from the opposing team and beat it.

How to win without fighting? If there are those who sow seeds of hatred, millions can sow seeds of love, understanding, kindness, respect, compassion, affection, joy and friendship. This is a practical spirituality. Sending mental messages, by means of communication such as the Internet, can fill the minds with good feelings, is not innocuous to show compassion. It is a necessity! We need compassion for our survival, said the Dalai Lama. The work of sowing seeds of love and mercy is the work of every human being, regardless of the spiritual approach he practices.

I hold that every human being has the right to defend himself against aggression, but for spiritual warfare we must fight with spiritual ideas. We should not think about converting or convincing, it is enough to inform and share messages to inspire and be inspired, like these of Rumi. I give as an example some brief poems by Rumi.
From Moses and the Shepherd: Within the Kaaba / it does not matter in which direction you orient / your prayer mat! / Ocean Diver does not need snow shoes! / The Religion of Love has no code or doctrine. / Only God.
The Religion of Love: The sect of lovers is different from all others. / Lovers have a religion and a faith of their own. / Although ruby does not have a seal, what does it matter? / Love is not afraid in the middle of the sea of fear. (Poetry of the Spirit, E: Alan Jacobs, Barnes & Noble, 2005, New York).

Recall the wisdom of Chief Seattle: "Man did not weave the web of life. It is only a strand in it. Whatever you do to the fabric or to the web, do it to yourself. All things are connected”. "That is, all who exercise violence, do it to themselves. For this reason all forms of violence end up defeated. Spiritually best victory is the one transforming an enemy into a friend.

We must recognize that what we think is important and has consequences; the law of karma is that, every thought has its consequence. We can think and do what we want, but we will never avoid the consequences of our thoughts and actions. We can all think, and it would be very useful to take responsibility for thinking based on high and healing principles, principles of love, peace, justice and harmony. They will have their consequence. Let us not abandon ourselves to oblivion. If terrorism depends on others, harmony depends on us. Let us keep the harmony in our daily thought, for on this depends the future of being. Our being.
